The terror of panic attacks
If you've suffered a panic attack, you'll understand the terror and anxiety they cause. They're very common and symptoms include palpitations, shortness of breath and feelings of loss of control. Every symptom you experience during an attack is a natural, harmless part of your body's fight-or-flight reaction - but can very frightening at the time as you feel so out of control.
Panic symptoms are the direct result of the hormone adrenaline which is released when you perceive that you are in danger. Your blood pressure then increases and breathing speeds up preparing you for muscular effort. Although the feelings you experience are very unpleasant, they will do you no harm. You will not die or have a heart attack.
However, the fear of having a panic attack can often lead to the desire to avoid certain situations or even forcing yourself into feared situations but feeling full of dread and anxiety. You may well be building up anxiety about a situation days or weeks in advance but feel unable to change the way you think about it...
What is the cause of Panic Attacks?
Put simply, it's all about our thinking and emotional responses. When we lack the belief that we can handle a certain situation, we then try to mentally prepare for it - however, this generally involves imaging the worst case scenario. We can mis-use our imagination to overestimate the 'danger', otherwise known as 'catastrophic' thinking - resulting in an increase in anxiety. Once a panic attack has happened in a situation, the mind can quickly learn to fear the situation itself. You begin to 'fear the fear' itself. The panic response can be 'conditioned' to be triggered by the situation or environment.
Your anxiety can be eliminated as long as your thoughts about particular situations are realistic and accurate. This involves building the self belief that you have the skills to cope in challenging situations.
Panic attacks at home
Panic attacks can also occur when in places where people 'should' feel calm and relaxed such as in their own home. This can be particularly baffling to the sufferer because it makes no logical sense as there is no immediate threat. How do this happen? Well panic attacks are not directly caused by the situations and environments that we find ourselves in, but the thoughts (conscious or unconscious) that we have whilst in those situations.
The good news is that I have helped many people have recover from panic attacks, and I can help you can too!
