By Cara Ostryn, hypnotherapist and hypnotist at the Ruislip Hypnotherapy Clinic - serving Eastcote, Pinner, Harrow, Hillingdon, Uxbridge, Northwood, Watford, Wembley and Central London.
DEPRESSION is very common. Almost anybody can develop the illness and it is estimated that between 10-20% of the population are suffering from it to some extent at any one time. Major depression is the number one psychological disorder in the western world*.
We all feel down from time to time - feelings of sadness are quite normal. We can feel down, or miserable, 'in a mood' but depression is where one feels this to a greater extent for a extended period of time. Stress can certainly lead to these feelings: pressures of work, finances, relationship or family worries. However, what is different about depression is that these feelings last for weeks or months, rather than days.
Socially speaking, depression often surfaces in the context of relationships. Death of loved ones, romantic and marital breakups, betrayals by friends or authority figures can all significantly increase the risk of depression.
Anxiety disorders, such as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, social phobia and generalized anxiety disorder, often accompany depression.
Symptoms of depression
Being unable to gain pleasure from activities that normally would be pleasurable.
Losing interest in normal activities, hobbies and everyday life.
Feeling restless, tense and anxious.
Feeling tired all of the time and having no energy.
Difficulty sleeping or waking early in the morning, or even getting out of bed in the morning. Nightmares can also be a factor.
Having a poor appetite, no interest in food and losing weight (though some people gain weight due to comfort eating).
Spending a lot of time thinking about what has gone wrong, what will go wrong or what is wrong about yourself as a person
Loss of interest in sex.
Brooding and ruminating about things. Black or white thinking patterns.
Having difficulty in concentrating and thinking clearly.
Feeling irritable or feeling angry.
Losing self-confidence.
Avoiding other people.
Finding it harder than usual to make decisions.
Feeling useless and inadequate
Feeling guilty about who you are and what you have done.
Feeling hopeless - that nothing will make things better.
Feeling that life isn't worth living. Suicidal feelings.
Much of clinical depression is about how we interpret reality, based upon our personality types and thinking styles. When someone broods or ruminates about negative things, this focus of attention on the bad/sad things in life will almost certainly affect how they feel. A downward spiral begins and so continues to fuel the sadness.
Depression and brain chemistry?
So what about the notion that depression is due to some unnatural chemical imbalance in the brain. That this imbalance is the cause of depression?
Well, it may be possible in a few cases, When we look at the increase in depression over the last 50 years or so, we will see that our brain chemistry just can't change that quickly. There is 10 times more major depression in people born after 1945 than in those born before. This clearly shows that the root cause of most depression is not a chemical imbalance.
Hypnotherapy for Depression: Why Hypnoanalysis is so successful at treating it.
If you have feelings of sadness or depression, I'm sure you know the cause of SOME of these feelings. Hypnoanalysis gets to the cause of sadness locked away in the unconscious - the kind of sadness that no amount of counselling or talking about seems to help.
Pure Hypnoanalysis (sometimes just called 'hypnoanalysis' or 'hypno-analysis') is used get to the root cause of the problem and can resolve the symptoms completely and permanently.
I believe pure hypnoanalysis to be the most effective and quickest form of psychotherapy/hypnotherapy available today, for almost all psychological, emotional and stress-related symptoms.
Pure Hypnoanalysis creates a safe, trusting and confidential environment where the natural therapeutic process can work. A simple process of Free Association is used, whereby the client verbalises experiences from their life, allowing them to slowly bring all the bottled up emotions to the surface. It doesn’t rely on, ‘fishing techniques’, regression techniques' or any other ‘invasive’ techniques in order to work effectively. This form of hypnotherapy can totally resolve the cause of unconscious anxieties - leaving the sufferer free of their symptoms for life!
